When Ranjit Singh was returning back to Gujranwala, he heard the sad news of the death of his father.
He atonce rushed to Gujranwala. He was very disturbed and agonized at the death of his father. He was just a boy of eleven years. There he was worried about the handling of such a big enterprise. But his brave mother-in-law Sardarni Sada Kaur and mother Rai Kaur consoled him.
Gradually he took heart and started to go to jungle for hunting and battle exercises.
One day Ranjit Singh went with his associates in the jungle of Ram Nagar for playing the game of hunting.
Incidentally one deer came running in front of his horse. He at once struck his horse with heel and chased the deer.
In this process of chasing the deer he reached very far and parted away from his fellows. When the deer became out of sight he made up his mind to return back.
While he was returning, he saw Hashmat Khan with his friends. Hashmat Khan had great enmity with Ranjit Singh as his father Maha Singh had usurped his territory.
When Hashmat Khan saw Ranjit Singh, he atonce became alert and loaded his rifle to kill him. But Ranjit Singh was not afraid of him. He stopped his horse in front of him and unsheathed his sword.
Hashmat Khan was very happy as Ranjit Singh was in his clutches. He aimed and fired one short towards Ranjit Singh.
But that shot instead of striking Ranjit Singh, hit the reins of the horse.
When Ranjit Singh saw that fire of Hashmat Khan had gone astray, he at once dismounted from his horse and ran towards him.
Hashmat Khan was trying to reload his rifle when Ranjit Singh attacked him with great force and cut his head with one blow. When the friends of Hashmat Khan found that he had died, they fled away.
Ranjit Singh stood there with great arrogance. The head and body of Hashmat Khan were lying on the ground. He took the head of Hashmat Khan on his sword and mounting his horse reached the spot where his friends were waiting for him.
When they saw that he was carrying the head of Hashmat Khan on his sword, they were astonished to see such an act of bravery of a minor young boy.
His mother felt very happy, when he narrated that incident to her. Hearing this she said, “My son is very brave. None can face him. I am very proud of him.”
When his mother-in-law Sardarni Sada Kaur heard about this incident, she also came to congratulate Ranjit Singh. His mother distributed sweets to the poor.
